Sushi Kami – Rancho Bernardo, CA

Sushi Kami is a small Japanese restaurant located in Rancho Bernardo. I’ve seen them over the years but never had an urge to try them. I’ve noticed recent toro and uni nigiri they offered so decided to treat family to dinner one evening. I also revisited for a lunch date some weeks ago.

SUSHI KAMI

Sushi Kami is located almost across the street from Phil’s BBQ. The restaurant shares a small parking lot with other tenants. The hostess was very kind and sat our party of five in a comfortable table.

COMPLIMENTARY

They give you free edamame here at Sushi Kami!

MISO SOUP

The miso soup comes with their special combo. I think we had 3 soups?

GINGER AND WASABI
KAMI SPECIAL COMBO

The special combo comes with Sashimi, Sushi, Cali roll, Spicy tuna, Steak and Chicken teriyaki, Mixed tempura, Miso soup. It’s a pretty good deal for $49.

Tuna, albacore, and salmon were the sashimi selection. I liked the salmon the most. The tuna was average.

The chicken and steak teriyaki came out on a sizzling platter. Both meats were a bit dry but the sweet teriyaki sauce helped. I liked the bed of vegetables underneath the meats.

I wanted to treat my mom and grams to the uni and toro.

TORO $15

The toro looked beautifully marbled and fatty. Fresh wasabi topped each piece. Unfortunately, the pricey sushi didn’t have that ‘melt in your mouth’ bliss you expect from toro. The bellies tasted more standard than anything. I wouldn’t order this again for $7.5 a piece.

UNI $16

The uni was $16 for two pieces. The roe tasted fresh, smooth, and briney. We enjoyed this.

I can’t remember the name of this roll.

Friend ordered a sapporo on draft.

Service was good. Sushi Kami is Korean owned and operated I believe. It was a filling meal so dinner was a success. I didn’t feel all the items were top quality but the value for some of the items were fair.

2nd visit:

It was a last minute lunch date and friend suggested Sushi Kami. He said he comes here when he has a sushi craving.

SUSHI KAMI

The restaurant wasn’t too busy that mid week for lunch.

COMPLIMENTARY EDAMAME

I like the salted complimentary edamame here. It’s a nice appetizer to chew on when you’re looking through the menu. Friend did the ordering that day.

SEAWEED SALAD

This was a bit too sweet for me.

CUCUMBER SALAD

The cucumber salad was nicely tart and came topped with a piece of shrimp and krab.

SUSHI

He must like the shrimp here as he ordered shrimp sushi and salmon nigiri for me. The salmon was ok.

SASHIMI

The sashimi sampler came with albacore, salmon, and some sort of white fish. I wasn’t a fan of the white fish or the salmon. The albacore was alright but the better of the three.

BAKED SCALLOP ROLL

I was quietly laughing at this point as I didn’t realize how much he had ordered. The baked scallop was had a nice presentation. I mostly ate the baked mayo top 🙂

GALBI BENTO

The galbi comes out on a sizzling platter. The thin bone in short ribs were fairly tender and well marinated. This was probably my favorite dish of lunch.

The bento comes with rice, salad, and fried dumplings.

LUNCH FOR 2

Not a bad meal for a lunch date. The company was more memorable than the meal and sometimes that’s more meaningful. Service again was attentive and efficient. Sushi Kami offers a variety of items so it’s a fun restaurant to visit if you’re in this part of town.
